Data is not just data. Data is people

The lack of data security can culminate in cyber attacks and information leakage, which significantly affects the financial health of companies and their trustworthiness with customers. This is because data is not just numbers or stored names but is totally related to people and defines who they are, such as emails, age, phone number, etc. It is the why a law like GDPR exists to prevent people from being compromised because of poorly stored or managed data.

What is GDPR?

According to GDPR.EU, “The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) is the toughest privacy and security law in the world. Though it was drafted and passed by the European Union (EU), it imposes obligations onto organizations anywhere, so long as they target or collect data related to people in the EU. The regulation was put into effect on May 25, 2018. The GDPR will levy harsh fines against those who violate its privacy and security standards, with penalties reaching into the tens of millions of euros”.

The GDPR applies to anyone outside or inside the EU who works with data from people inside it. This means that even if you are in the UK or US, for exemple, this law will most likely apply to you.

This set of laws basically says that if you obtain, generate, store, process, hold or control data from people within the EU you need authorization for this, and you need to protect such data. Otherwise a fine will be applied to your company.

Protecting this data also means preventing cyber-attacks so it wont get leaked onto the internet.

Why do you need to worry about data security?

When your company is committed to keeping data safe, you automatically show your customers that you care about them. This increases the chance of having good retention and loyalty. A customer with a good experience, who feels secure in buying from your website, can become a potential promoter, referring your company to friends and giving public praise.

Cohesity Simplifies GDPR Compliance

Legacy secondary storage consists of a patchwork of point appliances that make GDPR compliance difficult to achieve.

Data is copied across silos (for backups, archive, test/dev, and analytics) and must be protected and managed multiple times across silos using a variety of point solutions. If any single one of these silos is noncompliant, the whole organization could be liable for significant penalties.
