A typical customer conversation...

In today’s blog I wanted to run you through a typical customer conversation that I’m sure many of you are familiar with. Background: Bloxham Mill provide serviced office solutions to over 200 UK based companies. They offer a broad portfolio of services and wanted to expand their DC offering to provide an infrastructure service to their clients. The initial meeting between Ethos Technology and Bloxham Mill to identify their storage requirements started off as they often do: Me: “How much data loss can you (and/or your clients) tolerate during a DR?”Client: “Pretty much zero”Me: “What performance do you need?”Client: “Really fast to support some of the requirements, less fast for others”Me: “How much storage do you need?”Client: “A little bit to begin with but if things go well with the service, lots”Me: “What storage protocols do you need to support”Client: “Erm, all of them?”Me: “What’s your budget?”Client: Feels around pockets for...

Compuverde Providing Bloxham Mill With vNAS Storage Solution

To offer expanded data center infrastructure services to iSME customers Compuverde AB announced that it has enabled Bloxham Mill Business Centre, a provider of flexible and cost-effective alternatives to conventional offices, to offer expanded data center infrastructure services to its SME customers. Bloxham Mill needed a storage solution that would provide synchronous data replication between two discrete data center locations at a competitive cost and without the complexity that normally comes with it. The solution had to support virtual and bare-metal workloads; block, file and object protocols; and directory integration, as well as offer secure multi-tenancy. All of these requirements would typically mean multiple solutions from multiple vendors, like a combination of Isilon and Nutanix. But Compuverde's vNAS solution and hyper-converged infrastructure met all Bloxham Mill's needs in a unified storage fabric capable of spanning multiple data centers. Mirrored, distributed data: Compuverde can be deployed as a metro cluster, without additional...

Legal IT Backup Solutions

Following on from my previous article on how Cohesity can help in legal IT and inspired by a similar article I read about the nightmares IT teams have within legal when asked for a file restore from backup! Whilst supporting legal firms I have restored my fair share of files, folders, emails, databases and many more data types across varied solutions and media. The anxiety builds quickly as this is normally requested by a PA but you are fully aware there is a Partner/Solicitor behind the request that requires the restore like yesterday; normally as part of a matter they are working on. Nine times out of ten the file has been deleted by the someone involved in the matter but this conversation will never be discussed! This is also a no go area when explaining the time it will take to request and receive the tapes from store, catalogue them,...

Emerging tech distie Ethos bets on unicorns for success

Niche distributor attracting attention from giant resellers as it looks to specialise its way to success Emerging technologies distributor Ethos Technology is betting on a small number of niche "unicorns" it hopes will fuel its growth, against a backdrop of rapid consolidation in the industry. Ethos was launched a year ago with the aim of bringing cutting-edge technology from Silicon Valley to the UK at the same time as it launches in the US, looking to help the UK channel keep up with its American counterparts. It aims to turn over £6m this financial year – a figure it forecasts will double in the next. Although 90 per cent of its business still comes from up-and-coming US vendors – such as storage firm Cohesity and software-defined storage player Hedvig – it has now taken on Israeli cloud infrastructure vendor Stratoscale and Swedish software-defined outfit Compuverde, among others. An office on the...
